Democrats are projected to win control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections, CBS News and NBC News report. NPR reports that Democrats flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats, in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, Iowa and Maine. Democrats are due to take control of Congress in January, while Donald Trump remains president, a situation NPR describes as divided government.

Texas: First Democratic Senate Win Since 1988

Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general, in the Texas Senate race. Houston Public Media reports it is the first Democratic Senate win in Texas since 1988. Paxton conceded at about 10:20pm, the outlet reported. Talarico, a four-term state lawmaker from Austin, compared his victory to the story of David and Goliath.

Kansas: First Democratic Senator Since 1932

In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton was elected to the Senate, the first Democrat to win the state’s Senate seat since 1932, Time and NBC News report. MS NOW’s coverage shows him leading incumbent Republican Roger Marshall. Hamilton told CBS News he would be an “independent-minded Democrat.”

The Other Flipped Seats

In North Carolina, former Governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley for an open seat. The AP reports it is the first time Democrats have won a North Carolina Senate race since 2008. In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews won a race that Time describes as an upset in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate this century. NBC News’s results show her ahead of Sen. Lindsey Graham.

In Ohio, former senator Sherrod Brown won the special election over Sen. Jon Husted, according to NBC News’s results page. In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek flipped an open Republican-held seat, the AP projects. NPR and NBC News also list Maine among the flipped seats.

Not every close race went Democratic. Democrats held Georgia, where Sen. Jon Ossoff won, and Republicans held Nebraska, where NBC News projects Pete Ricketts defeated independent Dan Osborn.

What Happens Next

NBC News reports that Democrats will take control of both chambers in January. CBS News and NBC News project a Democratic House majority, and final seat counts were still being tallied in the coverage reviewed. The results become official after states certify them.
