Increasing citizenships grants in Europe

According to new figures from 2011 released by Eurostat and charted by the statistics portal Statista, the European Union granted 783,100 people citizenship in 2011. Altogether, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and Germany accounted for almost three quarters of all citizenships granted across the 27 EU member states.

The United Kingdom granted the most citizenships with 188,800. France and Spain rounded off the top three with 114,600 each. Germany stands in fourth place with 109,600 citizenships granted.

However, in terms of citizens acquired per 1,000 inhabitants, Luxembourg is Europe's leader with 6.6. Sweden came second with 3.8 and the United Kingdom came third with 2.8.
